Indiana will hire former New York Giants strength coach Aaron Wellman as its next strength and conditioning coach, a source informed TheHoosier.com on Saturday.

The hire comes a week after Indiana lost strength and conditioning tandem David Ballou and Matt Rhea to Alabama, following two seasons in Bloomington.

Wellman has been in New York for four seasons and, before joining the Giants, spent time at Notre Dame, Michigan, Michigan State, San Diego State and Ball State throughout 20 years of Division I experience. He began his strength and conditioning career at Indiana, where he spent three years as a full-time assistant strength and conditioning coach after three years as a graduate assistant on the Hoosier staff.

He grew up in Ligonier, Indiana, played his college ball as a safety at Manchester College and earned master's degrees in applied sports science (1998) and nutritional science (2009) from Indiana University.

Wellman never saw his career cross with Ballou's, but he was a graduate assistant when Ballou played at Indiana.

At Michigan, Wellman spent the 2011-14 seasons under Brady Hoke, at Notre Dame, he coached under Brian Kelly in 2015 and with the Giants, he spent time under head coaches Ben McAdoo, Steve Spagnuolo and Pat Schurmur.

"When he arrived in 2016, Wellman significantly changed the Giants' offseason and in-season training regimens, and the result has been a substantial decrease in the number of season-ending injuries suffered by Giants players," the Giants' website states on Wellman's profile.
