The early clubhouse favorite for Indiana's annual "sleeper" recruiting pickup is officially a Hoosier.
Horsham (Pa.) Hatboro Horsham forward Clifton Moore signed his National Letter of Intent to Indiana on Thursday to make his commitment to IU binding during the early signing period.
Here's a look at what the Hoosiers are getting in Moore.
The Basics
Measurements: 6-10, 195 pounds.
Hometown/School: Horsham (Pa.) Hatboro-Horsham.
Rankings: Three-star prospect.
Other Schools In The Mix: Ole Miss, Northwestern, Kansas State and Boston College among others.
In One Sentence…: A stretch four at the college level - thanks to a growth spurt - after years of playing guard.
Accomplishments: Averaged over 13 points per game for Hatboro Horsham Sr. as a junior, including a 28-point performance that lifted his squad to a 68-46 win over Strath Haven in the District One Class AAAA playoffs.
Noteworthy: Started his high school career around 6-2 or 6-3, but gradually continued to grow into now 6-10 with a 7-3 wingspan ... Played AAU for HoopDreamz, which is unaffiliated with a shoe company, and thus kept Moore's recruitment/development under the radar.
The Recruitment
Official visits taken: Mississippi, Indiana.
Summary: Moore is considered one of the biggest sleeper prospects on the east coast, and possibly even nationally. Before his recruiting started heating up with high majors, many of the Philadelphia-area mid-major programs were hoping to keep Moore a secret and land his services before others found out about him. But Indiana, Ole Miss, and Northwestern among others sniffed Moore out and came calling. Ole Miss had recruited Moore much longer than the Hoosiers and he took his first official visit to see the Rebels. However, he didn't pop following that trip, and the stars aligned when he visited Bloomington and pulled the trigger on a commitment at the end of his weekend. He cited Indiana's development with under the radar players like him as a key factor in his decision.
Scouting Report
Strengths:
· Versatility - Moore projects as a stretch four, but thanks to his years and experience playing guard as he's continued to grow, he's managed to retain those skills as he's matured. He maintains the mobility and shooting ability he developed in his younger years. Like many of Indiana's targets, he won't be pigeonholed into just one position.
· Upside - The potential is obvious. No one is comparing Moore to former Kentucky start Anthony Davis, whose growth spurt shot him from an unknown prospect as a guard to a five-star big man and eventual No. 1 pick in the NBA. However, it's not really fair to put a ceiling on Moore until he's able to settle into his body and get really comfortable with himself and his capabilities. Regardless of the outcome, his story will be an interesting one to follow.
Areas To Improve:
· Productivity - Moore's AAU coach, Jonathan Michels, said one of the reasons the 6-10 forward was discovered this summer was a newfound confidence in himself that led to a new aggressiveness on the court. One would like to see that continue, because Moore's numbers prior to this AAU season (like his junior year of HS) won't sell many people on his stock. A productive senior year of high school would help signal how legit some of the hype is.
Projection: Frankly, it's too soon to know how Moore projects immediately at IU given the lack of in-person evaluations of the new Hoosier. One would assume with his continued growth he might need some time, but given the right amount of time in the right program he could emerge as a star down the road.
Quotable: "Sometimes it is all about being in the right place at the right time. While scouting Malik Williams during the summer, Indiana came across power forward Clifton Moore. While Williams ended up committing to Louisville, Indiana added Moore on Sunday and he's one of the more intriguing, if not downright mysterious, guys in the class of 2017.
"He is a long and slender athlete who moves with fluidity and he appears to have a very dangerous jump shot with easy range to the three-point line. However, he is also lacking in strength and isn't a player that has been heavily scouted against other top high school talent.
"In speaking with some coaches who unsuccessfully recruited Moore, it appears that Indiana may have stumbled across a genuine under-the-radar gem. Moore's shooting and upside have been consistently praised and the word is that once he adds weight he could merge into a sleeper prospect. Two coaches compared him to former five-star and current Florida junior Devin Robinson." - Eric Bossi, Rivals.com national analyst.
