With the offseason underway, TheHoosier.com will review each IU player's 2016-17 season.

We continue the series with a look at freshman guard Devonte Green.

Stats

Averaged 4.4 points and 1.8 rebounds in 15.2 minutes per game ... Shot 44.3 percent from the field, including 43.6 percent from 3-point range ... Finished third on the team in steals with 22 ... Also dished out 34 assists ... Played in 32 of IU's 34 games last season, starting in three of them.

Season In Review

Green evolved from three-star recruit not ranked in the Rivals150 to one of the first guard off the bench in IU's rotation during his first season in Bloomington.

His Hoosier debut included a clutch 3-pointer in Indiana's season-opening win over Kansas in the Armed Forces Classic. Green also logged at least 10 minutes of playing time in 11 of the 12 nonconference games he played in.

However, injuries and the gradual improvement of redshirt junior guard Josh Newkirk in Big Ten play would end up limiting Green's potential.

Green injured his ankle in the Hoosiers' Big Ten opener against Nebraska, a setback which cost him two games. Close to mid-February, he got back spams while attempting to lift a 35-pound bar.

Newkirk, meanwhile, began to grow confident in his shot, and improved his shooting percentage from 40 percent during the nonconference stretch to 44 percent in Big Ten play.

Green's game could still use some work - he had more turnovers (40) than assists (34) last season - but he did show promise late, scoring 10 or more points in three of the Hoosiers' final five games.

Outlook

Green at the very least could be a dependable backup point guard for Indiana next season.

The key to that, though, will be cutting down on the turnovers and staying healthy.
