BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- Following a 45-minute delay due to a tornado warning, Indiana head coach Archie Miller was able to evaluate his group one final time in a preseason setting.

The result - a 74-53 exhibition win over the University of Indianapolis at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall - provided him with both encouragement and areas where he felt like his team still needs to work on five days away from the regular season opener.

"I thought some guys did some better things than they did last week. I thought didn't some things we asked them to do." Miller said. "That's part of it, and we'll learn from it. We have a big week for improvement with a huge, huge home opener on Friday."

Senior guard Robert Johnson poured in a game-high 18 points on 7 of 15 shooting from the field, with sophomore forward De'Ron Davis adding 11 points and seven rebounds.

While Miller wanted to see the potential of a frontcourt tandem featuring junior forward Juwan Morgan and graduate forward Collin Hartman, he wound up getting a better idea of what senior forward Freddie McSwain Jr. could provide.

McSwain's activity on both ends of the court stood out. He finished with 12 points (4 of 7 from the field) and nine rebounds in 13 minutes off the bench, one rebound shy of a double-double.

"What I worked on mostly offseason was just my mid-range jumper and just being patient in the post and working my post moves and just being confident overall, just being confident in my game," McSwain said. "And that's really it."

Hartman made his long-awaited return to the court, scoring nine points on 3 for 3 shooting from 3-point range in 15 minutes off the bench. He also chipped in three rebounds in his first on-court action since March 25, 2016.

"It felt good," Hartman said. "It's been over a year since I've been able to put this jersey on and play against somebody else with these guys. And it really felt good to get the first one under our belt and get the ball rolling."

Freshman guard Al Durham Jr. also made his debut, recording two points and two assists within his minutes limit of 10.

Though he finished 1 for 6 from the field, including missing all four of his 3-point attempts, Miller said there's more behind the scenes that attributed to an uncharacteristic day for Durham.

"The one thing about Al you didn't get a chance to see is he got some good looks and didn't knock them down," Miller said. "He's a really good shooter. I think he's going to be a guy that can really continue to make good shots for us."

Indiana finished with just eight turnovers, two fewer than it had in its first exhibition game. However, Miller lamented Indiana's shot selection at times, specifically missed shots that against stiffer competition would lead to transition points for an opponent.

"Anything under 10 is always what we're gunning for," Miller said of IU's turnovers. "But if you add in the six to eight bad shots in later-down-the-line games against good competition, (that) is going to turn into offense on the other side of the ball."

Johnson is also aware of what Indiana has to work on heading into Friday's 7 p.m. ET home opener against Indiana State.

"I think Coach Archie is going to do us a great job of giving us a game plan of how to get better every day until we get to Friday," Johnson said. "So I'm confident that we'll be ready."
