Former Indiana baseball standout Kyle Schwarber was selected to the 2022 MLB All-Star game, announced on Sunday.
Schwarber is leading the National League in home runs with 28. He also has 57 RBIs and a .222 batting average. He joins teammate Bryce Harper as the two Philadelphia Phillies players to be selected, although Harper is recovering from an injury and won't play.
“It’s obviously something that you always want to be,” Schwarber said about making his second consecutive All-Star team. “It’s definitely an honor to be there and represent the Phillies. It sucks that Harp won’t be able to play. Hopefully, I can represent the Phillies pretty well.
"They’re pushing to get the best out of me, and I want to get the best out of them. This is something that goes around the whole room for everyone. I don’t like to take credit for something. These guys have been pushing me every single day.”
Schwarber said he is 50-50 on participating in the MLB Home-Run Derby.
The All-Star game takes place on July 19.
Schwarber played three seasons for Indiana before being selected No. 4 overall in the 2014 MLB Draft.
Schwarber was the highest draft pick in Indiana baseball history. During his time at Indiana, he was a two-time First Team All-American and Louisville Slugger Freshman All-American honoree. In IU history, he ranks fifth in slugging percentage (.607), sixth in home runs (40), eighth in hits (238) and tied for eighth in triples (12) and runs (182). He was an All-Big Ten honoree all three years.
In his MLB career, he has 176 home runs and 401 RBIs in eight seasons. He has a career .234 batting average.
This year with the Philadelphia Phillies he is on pace for his best statistical season in his career.
