After snatching a defense rebound, Indiana sophomore forward Juwan Morgan went used a behind-the-back dribble to get by his defender then split a bounce pass between two more for a fastbreak dunk by fellow sophomore forward OG Anunoby.

If there was any play that stood out from Friday night's Haunted Hall of Hoops split-squad scrimmage at Simon Skjodt Assembly Hall, it was that one, because it showed Morgan is back at full strength with no signs of rust.

"It's good to get Juwan Morgan back," IU assistant coach Rob Judson said after the event. "He started out with limited contact and now he's back out there playing with full contact."

Morgan unofficially finished with 5 points, 3 rebounds, 3 assists and one block, doing a little bit of everything for each team he was on.

One of his baskets came off a reverse layup and resulted in a drawn foul.

During the Hoosiers' publicly-televised practice on Oct. 15, Indiana head coach Tom Crean indicated that Morgan was close to resuming full contact. Two days prior, Crean had said Morgan could do everything but play live, estimating his return to full contact being a week or two away from that point.

Morgan's play Friday night seemed to line up with that prospective timeline, as he was also a full participant in warm-ups.

The Waynesville, Missouri, native spent the last six months rehabilitating a shoulder injury after undergoing successful shoulder surgery in April. Now, he's back to contributing in every facet of the game.

Morgan tallied 71 points, 64 rebounds, 11 blocks and nine steals in 30 games off the bench in his first year as a Hoosier. That versatility was once again on display Friday night, with the fastbreak showing flashes of him being able to run the point.

"I think he's really embraced that versatility role," Indiana assistant coach Chuck Martin said. "A year later, you're starting to see a guy that can play multiple positions."

With do-it-all senior forward Collin Hartman out indefinitely with a knee injury, the ability to play a variety of spots on the court will be even more critical this season.

"With a guy like Collin not being there opening night, it's comforting to know that you have a guy that you can play at the backup one, the two, the three and have the intelligence to execute all the offensive schemes and the intelligence defensively to help the young guys with rotations against an opponent like Kansas in two weeks," Martin said.

Johnson also back at full strength

Like Morgan, Indiana junior guard Robert Johnson has spent the last six months recovering from April surgery.

Johnson underwent ankle surgery that month but had a slightly quicker recovery process, getting full clearance a little over a month a go. He too appeared to have knocked off the rust, finishing with a scrimmage-high 22 points.

"He's a tremendously hard worker," Judson said. "He worked tremendously hard over the summer with the things he could do even though his surgery was in the healing process."

In the first session of the split-squad event, Morgan had 12 points and made his first four shots. He hit three consecutive field goals, then swished a three, not missing a single shot until splitting a pair of free throw attempts near the end.

He also set up his teammates with crisp passes while running the offense as the point guard.

"He understands spacing very well," Judson said. "He got the space, that team moved the ball and he knocked down those open shots. That was great to see."
