Nate Sudfeld is the latest former Hoosier football standout to earn a Super Bowl ring.
Sudfeld, a former IU quarterback who has been with the Philadelphia Eagles the entire 2017 season, hoisted the Lombardi Trophy with the NFL franchise Sunday night after a 41-33 victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl 52 at U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis.
It marks the second time in the last three seasons a former Indiana player has won a Super Bowl. Former IU wide receiver Cody Latimer won one with the Denver Broncos in 2016, when the Broncos defeated the Carolina Panthers 24-10 in Super Bowl 50 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California.
Overall, Sudfeld is the 13th former Hoosier to win a Super Bowl. Here's the complete list, according to subscriber IUninethree93:
• Bob Skoronski - offensive tackle - Green Bay Packers - Super Bowls I & II (starter)
• Tom Nowatzke - running back - Baltimore Colts - Super Bowl V (starter, scored TD)
• Doug Crusan - offensive tackle - Miami Dolphins - Super Bowls VII & VIII
• Eric Moore - offensive guard - New York Giants - Super Bowl XXV (starter)
• Hurvin McCormack - defensive tackle - Dallas Cowboys - Super Bowl XXX
• Trent Green - quarterback - St. Louis Rams - Super Bowl XXXIV
• Antwaan Randle-El - quarterback (but played wide receiver in NFL) - Pittsburgh Steelers - Super Bowl XL (starter - threw TD pass)
• Tracy Porter - cornerback - New Orleans Saints - Super Bowl XLIV (starter - pick 6 to seal win)
• Courtney Roby - wide receiver - Saints - Super Bowl XLIV
• James Brewer - offensive tackle - Giants - Super Bowl XLVI
• Tandon Doss - wide receiver/kick returner - Baltimore Ravens - Super Bowl XLVII
• Latimer - wide receiver - Broncos - Super Bowl 50
• Sudfeld - quarterback - Eagles - Super Bowl LII
While Sudfeld did not see the field for Philadelphia, he did play an important role during the Eagles' preparation that week, tasked with mimicking Patriots quarterback Tom Brady as a member of the Eagles' scout team against their first-team defense in practice that week.
Sudfeld was a member of the Washington Redskins until the Redskins waived him on Sept. 2, 2017, five days before the start of the 2017 NFL season. The Eagles signed him to their practice squad on Sept. 3 and promoted to the active roster on Nov. 1 after the Colts tried to sign him. He made his NFL debut in Week 17 starting against the Cowboys, completing 19 of 23 passes for 134 yards.
