Tom Crean Wants Thomas Bryant Fired Up, Even If That Means A Chest Bump

Tom Crean didn't think Thomas Bryant was having enough fun on the floor.

So he did something Crean doesn't normally do.

He chest-bumped his 6-foot-10 forward.

"It just happened," Crean said. "It was spontaneous."

Bryant thrives off positive energy. When he's having fun, he's at his best.

"I think his energy is something that drives him to be good," junior guard Robert Johnson said. "And I think day in, day out, that's something that we have to have from him is energy, regardless of whether he's scoring points or not."

Bryant finished Indiana's 83-55 win against Southeast Missouri State with seven points on just 1-of-2 shooting. He was more active on the glass where he grabbed 10 rebounds against an undersized Redhawk program.

He's now the second NCAA Division I player this season to register at least seven points, 10 rebounds, three assists, three steals and four blocks in a game, joining Northern Iowa's Jeremy Morgan.

Bryant's one make was his only basket from within the arc. The other five points came on five-of-six shooting from the line. His lone miss came from 3-point range.

The chest bump came right in front of the bench.

"He was putting too much pressure on himself not having fun," Crean said. "And that's when he's at his best. Everything is fine, and you're hustling. And sometimes we have too much self-inflicted pressure because the frustration kicks in."

Bryant's performance Sunday wrapped up a stretch of 43 points, 33 rebounds, five assists and 10 blocks over four wins in eight days against Mississippi Valley State, No. 3 North Carolina, SIU-Edwardsville and Southeast Missouri State.

"He wants to play at a level moving forward where this is an average week," Crean said. "And he wants to do it for a decade plus."

There are going to be times like Sunday where the scoring simply isn't there for Bryant.

Whether that be because of game planning, his own struggles or any other factors, he'll have to continue to impact the game even when he isn't getting involved in the offense. There were a couple of times where he called for the ball in the post against an undersized Redhawk only to not get the ball.

"I felt we did a pretty good job containing Thomas Bryant," Southeastern Missouri State head coach Rick Ray said. "You can't guard him in the post if you allow him to catch it, so when we guard somebody, don't let him catch it."

But still, Bryant did his damage by setting career marks in steals and tying a career-best in blocks. He'll have nearly a full week to sharpen his game before playing Houston Baptist on Saturday.

And maybe he and Crean can sharpen up that chest bump.
