Transcript of speech:
Like Coach Crean said, I have a lot of family members, so I've got a
lot of people to thank. I've got quite a few things to say, but first
of all I'd like to thank God, because none of this would have been
possible without him, so thank the big guy upstairs for this amazing
opportunity he's given us seniors given everything we've gone through
and the group of guys you see over here. It's a pretty special
feeling that we were able to get back to prominence in the
country with basketball here at Indiana, so it's pretty cool.
Like I've said, there are so many people that have helped me on my
journey, so I'd like to start with my family. I might get a little
emotional, I'm a little girly I guess with that. I'd like to thank my
parents for always being there for me. All the hours spent in the
driveway and in the gym. All the AAU Tournaments that we traveled to,
getting the Xbox in the van, traveling down to Florida, all that cool
stuff. They were always there for me, they always believed in me, when
nobody else really did.
Also, for instilling that hard work ethic in me. I'm not the tallest
guy, I'm not the fastest guy, but I knew I had to work my tail off to
be able to play at a big time university, so I thank them for giving me
the heart. That's really why I'm on the floor.
I'd like to thank my grandparents, Grandpa Pace. Grandma Connie, you
guys have always been there for me, every tournament, every game, you
wouldn't miss it. My Grandma Pace passed away a couple years ago, I
wish she could be here right now. Thanks for all you've done, cooking
meals when I need some food. That's always been nice living locally, I
can just go home and get a home-cooked meal whenever you want, so I
thank you guys for that and always being there for me.
Now onto my siblings. Jay, you always believed in me. Even though
you're seven years older than me, beat me up a little bit when I was
younger, that made me a better person, better player. So I can box out
all the 6-8 guys I have to, when Coach Crean asks me to do that, that's
pretty cool to do that. I'll never forget the time one of your buddies
came over to play some basketball and I was like seven, and he was 13
or 14, and I beat him in one-on-one, and I'll never forget that moment
with you. You never let him live it down, and he never came back. He
never came back to play anymore, so it was alright.
Kaila, my little sister, my best friend. Sorry, I'm stopping like every
five seconds, I can't help it. She's gone through a lot, knee
surgeries, she's just as good of a basketball player that I am. I'm
still taller than you though, so don't forget that. Everybody thinks
that she's taller than me, and she's a better shooter and stuff, but
I'll just say that to make her feel good, but honestly it's not true. I
love you very much, and thanks for always being there for me.
Lastly, Kati. She's at every game, she would never miss a game ever.
And she's been through so much, and although she didn't play any
sports, she knows everything there is to know about basketball. You can
ask her anything, any Twitter, whatever you want to know, our whole
family just goes up to Kati. Kati, what's up? What's going on with
C-Wat, what's he doing tonight? He Tweeted something, he Instagrammed
something, Kati's all over that. I appreciate her for keeping us all
updated and everything she does for us. She's our rock, she keeps us
humble, and I love you.
Lauren, Jay's wife, thank you for supporting all the craziness in the
Hulls family. You came into a pretty crazy family; aunts, uncles,
cousins that are crazy about basketball. Luckily you're a sports fan
yourself, so I won't tell people where you went to college, but we
still love you with all our heart, and we know you're an IU fan down
deep, so thank you for all that you do.
I have a million family members so I can't thank them all individually,
but all my aunts, uncles, cousins, distant cousins in Florida,
they're always trying to get people to be Indiana Hoosier fans wherever
they are all over the country, and I just really appreciate that. Thank
you for sticking up for us, sticking up for me, and I love you all.
So after my family, there are lots of other people I'd like to thank.
I'm going to start with my AAU coaches, Kenny Blackwell, Coach Prior,
Grant Gibson, without you guys none of this would've happened. You guys
believed in me, you gave me a chance, you took us all over the country
playing in these different tournaments that college basketball coaches
were coming to watch. Although they were a little late on me a little
bit, I had good players on my team so they came to watch them, and thus
they had to watch me and put up with that, but I just really appreciate
all you've done for me and believing that I could play at the next
level.
My high school coaches at Bloomington South; Coach Holmes, Simpson,
Parker, Walls, Howington, there are so many other guys who are involved
in that program, but they gave me a chance when I was coming up as a
little guy. I didn't play varsity right away but worked my way up and
they trusted me, and they saw the hard work ethic that I put into the
game, and just thank you guys for getting me to this point in my life.
Lastly, I'd like to thank the whole IU coaching staff, Coach Crean,
Coach Buck, Coach Jackson, KJ, Coach McClain, and the past coaches like
Coach Seltzer, Coach Wat who's not here anymore, all those guys who
just gave me a chance and I just really appreciate that.
We've been through a lot together over the last four years, and a lot
of hard times, a lot of good times, some of our summer workouts with
Coach Wacko (Jackson) over there were pretty intense with the
teammates, but it made us better and got us to where we are today.
Coach Buck, thanks for coming to Pittsburgh. I think Coach Crean kind
of told you the story a little bit, I appreciate that and for believing
that I could do what I'm doing today.
I'd like to thank Jade, Dr. Rink, the medical staff, and Tim Garl, Dr.
Ahlfeld and Dr. Eddy, you guys do an amazing job with us. Whenever
we're sick, or Hanner's in there doing something crazy in the hot tub,
or that's Derek, he's always underneath in the hot tub, always there to
help us out and I really appreciate all you do for us.
Also I'd like to thank the managers, these guys don't get enough
credit. Whenever I wanted to get shots up, whether it's midnight or 8
in the morning, they're always there to rebound for you and never
complain about it. Thank you guys very much for that, rebounding for me.
Yeah…there's another page. Sorry.
Another person I'd like to thank is Ron Remak and his family over
there. Ron pretty much raised me as in his older son played with my
older brother so that's how our families met. He's been a huge
inspiration for me through high school, through college, through
everything. When my grandma passed away, he was always there. I love
you coach, thanks.
I'd like to thank Pastor Tom Ellsworth at Sherwood Oaks Christian
Church. He's done a lot of good things for me. I've gone to that church
pretty much my whole life, so I've learned a lot from him and I
appreciate all that he does, and everybody he preaches to on the same
page. He's done a lot for me and I appreciate all that he's done.
I'd like to thank all my friends and family. Being from Bloomington, I
have a lot of friends from high school that go to IU. I can't name you
all, but thank you all for the support, for believing in me, it's been
awesome.
I'd especially like to thank Caleb and Rowe, over here. Two of my best
friends, just like the managers, you know, whenever I needed somebody
to come rebound for me in high school; those guys don't really have
many friends I guess, so they came in to rebound for me and just help
me get better, and I got a lot of shots up that way. And Caleb claims
he can beat me in H-O-R-S-E, you know, so sometimes I play left-handed
to make him feel better. But he still doesn't win, so it doesn't
matter. But I thank those guys for being with me through thick and
thin, and they believed in me and helped me accomplish my dreams.
I'd like to thank Marni (Mooney) and Mattie White, the academic
advisors here. They also don't get enough credit. On the outside, I was
able to graduate in three years and I'm working on my Masters now, and
there's no way I could've done that without those two. Marni, my fellow
Panther over there, was always there for me. I try not to bug her too
much, but whenever I needed help, she was there for me, and I can't
thank her enough for all that she's done. Helping me get Academic
All-American was definitely a special accomplishment, but she gets a
lot of that credit.
Lastly, I'd like to thank this team that I'm with right now. In the
past, teams that I've been with, like I've said, the guys that have
been here for four years, we've been through a lot. They're like my
brothers. I love playing with these guys, I've loved playing with past
teams even though we may not have won as much as we wanted to. We stuck
with the program, we stuck with the plan, believed in what Coach Crean
and the staff were instilling in us and saw that we could be something
great.
So with this team, it's pretty special. We've got a lot of things left
to do, left in the season, and like Derek said, we did some work on
this wall over there, we still can do some work on that wall, and we
want to do some work over there on that wall and hang that next banner.
So that's our next goal, and I wouldn't trade any of this for anything
in the world. Even the losing and all that stuff, and it was the
hardest times of my life, but I had my family and my teammates and my
coaches to rely on, so I can't thank them enough.
And you, Hoosier Nation, I appreciate all that you have done being
there for us. It's been an awesome ride. Let's go get Banner Number
Six. Thank you."
