Simmie Cobbs first discovered the new look on Snapchat and laughed so hard he cried. Ricky Jones saw it when he arrived for fall camp and was confused.
Devine Redding, unlike Cobbs and Jones, was neither confused nor laughing, but rather supportive of it.
“It” was fifth-year senior wide receiver Mitchell Paige’s platinum-blond dyed hair, which made its media and public debut Wednesday at the team’s media day at the Henke Hall of Champions in Bloomington.
Redding liked it so much, in fact, that he considered adopting the new hairstyle himself and nearly convinced some of his teammates to follow through with it.
“I told him that the whole team, we should all go blond,” Redding said. “I was going to dye the tips of my dreads blond. Tegray (Scales) was thinking about getting a blond Mohawk. Chris (Covington) was thinking about getting a blond Mohawk. I was like, ‘Man, we should all get at least some type of blond in our hair.’ I think it would be cool.”
Paige got inspiration from soccer star Lionel Messi, who sported a similar look during one of his games which Paige watched on TV.
Reaction from the locker room was mostly positive with teammates laughing it off.
Cobbs thought it was hilarious. Jones barely recognized Paige.
“I literally found out when he showed for camp,” Jones said. “I walked in like, ‘what the?’ I didn’t know who the kid was. I had no idea who it was. It’s a wild haircut but I like it on him I guess.”
The majority of Paige’s family was also supportive of his new hairstyle.
“My mom was the one who wanted me to do it,” Paige said. “My dad thinks it’s really funny. My sister is not a fan. She’s very embarrassed. She’s like, ‘How do you walk around like that in public?’ She’s like a 20-year-old girl. She doesn’t understand it.”
When the team convened for camp Wednesday, Paige was jokingly introduced as a new member of the team.
“I just said, ‘hey, that's kind of interesting,’” Indiana head coach Kevin Wilson said. “We introduced him as a new player yesterday. I said all the newcomers stand up and say hi, so he actually started the welcome.”
Interesting was Wilson’s way of describing it. Jones described it as typical of Paige.
“It’s wild man,” Jones said. “It’s his personality though. Mitchell is an outgoing person. He can make friends with anybody. He’s a loud kid. He’s a little dude who has a big mouth, so that works for him.”
