Indiana kicker Logan Justus has been nominated for the Burlsworth Trophy, IU Athletics announced via a press release Wednesday, The award is given to honor an "outstanding player" in the nation whose career began as a walk-on.
Justus walked on to the IU team in 2015, when he redshirted. He didn’t see any game action until 2018, when he hit 15-of-18 field goals and 32-of-33 extra point attempts, when he was one of 20 semifinalists for the 2018 Lou Groza Award. He currently owns the best field goal percentage in program history, with 90 percent, and his 12th straight field goal in the Northwestern win moved him into second place in program history. The record is 15.
Justus is one of just seven kickers to have made all attempted field goals in 2019 to this point.
The Burlsworth Trophy was named after former Arkansas All-America offensive lineman Brandon Burlsworth.
“Without one D1 scholarship offer, Brandon Burlsworth walked on at the University of Arkansas in 1994,” the release noted. “He became a three-year starter and was eventually named an All-American in 1998. Burlsworth was selected as the 63rd overall pick by the Indianapolis Colts in the 1999 NFL draft, but was tragically killed in a car accident 11 days later. The Burlsworth Foundation was created in his memory and supports the physical and spiritual needs of children, in particular those children who have limited opportunities.”
