IU fans will be interested to read my Q&A with Keith Lander on the latest in his son's recruitment.
Indiana welcomed Khristian Lander to Bloomington last weekend for an official visit. I caught up with his father this week to get the latest on Khristian's recruitment.
NICK BAUMGART: How was the Indiana visit?
KEITH LANDER: It was a real good time. We joked, we laughed, we talked about some real stuff.
NICK BAUMGART: Your thoughts on "Hoosier Hysteria"?
KEITH LANDER: I think they livened "Hoosier Hysteria" up a bit, but it almost got wrecked when the fire alarm went off, probably from all the fireworks and smoke and fire, but that part added to the excitement.
NICK BAUMGART: How important are those types of events to a recruit?
KEITH LANDER: I'm not gonna say, 'oh we're gonna go to this school because of this event,' but at the end of the day, it makes the trip that much more enjoyable, that much more fun.
NICK BAUMGART: How did the Louisville and Indiana visits compare?
KEITH LANDER: In my opinion, the two visits were about the same for different reasons, if you know what I mean. "Louisville Live" was just different. I'd never seen anything like that before. It was outside and just where they had the fans positioned, where we were sitting, and the stage. We had a nice little time there. Not that we didn't have a good time at IU -- we did. But it was a different atmosphere.
But on both visits we talked about some serious questions that are going to come up real soon probably. We'll sit down and evaluate things when Khristian gets back from USA (Basketball) and discuss some possibilities that we hadn't expected before, I'll say.
Note: Khristian is in Colorado Springs this weekend fulfilling his final commitment of the year.
NICK BAUMGART: Does that change the timeline?
KEITH LANDER: It could possibly. That's what I mean when I say we're going to evaluate things when he gets back.
NICK BAUMGART: Could Khristian reclassify to 2020?
KEITH LANDER: That's the question! Nothing will be decided until the first of 2020 unless he kills it this school year. But those were some of the questions we had, school-wise, what classes to take.
NICK BAUMGART: Academics are a big part of Khristian personally, what are his thoughts there?
KEITH LANDER: He was all in on mechanical engineering, and now that's all changed... the more and more he looked into it, the more and more he realized what it was going to take to do that and play basketball. So I think the next couple of months, it's going to take a little work on getting some alternatives to that, some work from us and maybe from the school to find some legitimate options in the realm of engineering.
When he gets back, I want him taking a little break, but doing some work mentally on how we want to move forward. We will do that when he gets back next week.
NICK BAUMGART: What about Duke and Kentucky?
KEITH LANDER: Both have reached out, but neither have made any real push.
NICK BAUMGART: Anyone else involved?
KEITH LANDER: Yeah, UCLA. Memphis just got involved this week. Mike Miller called and said they had heard we wanted to stay close to home. That's simply not true. Selfishly, do I want Khristian close so I can see all his home games? Of course, but it comes down to where KHRISTIAN can see himself living for four years. It's his decision.
Note: Keith was a great athlete in his own right having played in the same high school backfield as former New York Giants running back Sean Bennett at Evansville Harrison High School before playing four years as a defensive back for Jack Harbaugh at Western Kentucky.
NICK BAUMGART: Is the Michigan visit still on for the weekend of October 25?
KEITH LANDER: Yeah, they gave us some options. I saw the weekend of the Notre Dame game (October 26), and they asked me, and well, you know what I said! Juwan Howard was in this week to meet Khristian. They'd actually never met personally, so he came in and introduced himself to make things easier when we visit.
The biggest takeaway here is Khristian Lander could reclassify to 2020 -- that's a real possibility now. Both Indiana and Louisville are pushing for it presently, according to a source.
Khristian Lander is known to have a very good relationship with 2020 Hoosier-commits Anthony Leal and Trey Galloway after playing together last summer, something Chris Mack doesn't have in his back pocket.
The Hoosiers are in the driver's seat, or at least sharing the wheel in pursuit of a blue-chip point guard at the moment.
More to come on this developing story in the coming weeks and months.
