Indiana basketball has brought in a talented four-man recruiting class that hit the needs for Mike Woodson when building his roster.
While the class is headlined by two five-star prospects in Jalen Hood-Schifino and Malik Reneau, CJ Gunn and Kaleb Banks bring very specific skillsets to the roster that can help immediately, even if in small doses.
Indiana has made it a priority to get bigger, longer and more athletic on the perimeter with its wings -- and Kaleb Banks fits that 'bigger wing' position and it's a position you can expect to see Banks at a lot moving forward.
"He still views me as a three," Banks said of Mike Woodson while talking to the media on Thursday. "During the scrimmages, I still play at the 3-spot. Pretty much I'm still viewed as a three."
Banks is a 6-foot-8 and 215-pound forward who came into Indiana with a good reputation in the Atlanta area as a scorer and versatile offensive player. With Indiana's need for increased playmaking on the perimeter to maintain a consistent level of success in Mike Woodson's offense, Banks' skillset is critical in how it develops.
"Definitely my shooting, being able to spread the floor, my versatility, being able to take the ball up, being able to rebound, going coast to coast," Banks said of his all-around game. "Making plays and getting my teammates over and getting my teammates involved and doing the things the coaches want me to, whatever I can bring to the table."
As a senior, Banks won the Georgia class 4A Player of the Year. He averaged 23.0 points, 10.0 rebounds and 1.4 steals per game. His ability to be a two-way player is intriguing, but he's also a very effective shooter, something that sometimes goes overlooked.
"He is a very versatile player both offensively and defensively," Mike Woodson said after Banks signed with Indiana. "His ability to score the basketball and create for him and his teammates is something that was very attractive to our staff."
He made 40 3's -- shooting 38 percent and also shot 63 percent from the field. He has shown the ability to knock down shots off of the dribble and off of the catch.
"A little bit of both. I could shoot a little bit but I'm developing more and more," Banks said. "I'm becoming more consistent with my three-point shot and it's helping me along. I understand, the new age forward, that's something that has to do with it, too, being able to shoot pretty good."
While Banks may not see major minutes for Indiana right away, he is someone that through the first few weeks of summer workouts, has already made an impact and proven to be a valuable player for this roster.
"Kaleb is a great player," IU senior forward Race Thompson said earlier this summer. "He is very talented, big, big wing that can defend, can really shoot the ball, score the ball at all three levels. I think that he'll be a really fun player to watch, and he's going to be really fun to play with because he can make shots and he can make plays for his teammates...But Kaleb, he's really impressed me a lot just how comfortable he is, how confident he is in himself being able to make plays, so I think he'll be a lot of fun to watch."
