UPDATE 12:03 PM: Indiana Athletics has released the following statement regarding the situation:
“We are aware of the situation, we will continue to monitor it as details become available and will take appropriate action.”
---------------
Freshman IU defensive lineman Jerome Johnson, 18, was cited for illegal possession and consumption over the weekend. Johnson's citation was first reported by the Indiana Daily Student.
According Indiana University Police Department Lt. Craig Munroe, officers were called to Briscoe Quad at 1:45 a.m. Saturday by a resident assistant of the campus dorm after a male subject was found passed out and unresponsive on a landing near the third floor by the assistant.
Johnson was then transported to IU Health Bloomington Hospital, where he later received his citation. His blood alcohol content was not disclosed.
A 6-foot-3, 300-pound three-star defensive tackle out of Bassfield [Mississippi] High School, Johnson did not see playing time in Indiana's 34-13 season-opening win at Florida International.
Johnson received his citation just two days after five IU players were suspended for the season-opener and another indefinitely. Junior wide receiver Simmie Cobbs, redshirt junior safety Chase Dutra, redshirt junior cornerback Noel Padmore, redshirt senior defensive lineman Ralph Green III and redshirt freshman defensive back Jake Attar all sat out IU's season-opener, while redshirt sophomore cornerback Wesley Green remains suspended indefinitely.
