Every Sunday, TheHoosier.com takes a look around the world of Indiana University Athletics to catch you up on the top stories from the previous week that was and look ahead to the week to come.

Football dominated the headlines this week with the INvasion camp series and media days to end a busy month of July. As we head into August, the rest of the fall sports are set to start up their respective seasons.

Olympics: IU's Ali Khalafalla aims to propel Egyptian swimming to a new level

Not once has an Egyptian swimmer stood on the podium to accept a medal at the Olympic Games.

Indiana’s Ali Khalafalla wants to change that.

The Egyptian swimmer out of Cairo takes pride in the opportunity to represent his home country in the Rio Games next month. The 50m freestyler said he appreciates the chance to be an ambassador for the sport in a country that historically hasn’t had many swimmers to talk about at the Games.

“Swimming is not really that popular, but we’re getting steadily popular each year,” Khalafalla said. “Hopefully people can see people like me doing it and want to do it, too.”

Men's Soccer: Jeremiah Gutjahr gets national team call up

Indiana sophomore Jeremiah Gutjahr was called up to the U.S. Under-20 National Team on Friday. It's his second stint with the national team in the last ten months.

Gutjahr began practicing with the team in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, on Saturday and will be with the squad until Aug. 8 preparing for a pair of domestic friendly matches against the New York Cosmos on Aug. 3 and the New York Red Bulls II on Aug. 7.

Gutjahr, a Bloomington native, appeared in 17 matches off the bench for the Hoosiers as a freshman, picking up an assist in IU's 4-1 victory over Michigan State.

He lost some of his first year in Bloomington when he was called up to the U-20 team to play in the Mercedes-Benz Elite Cup in Stuttgart, Germany. Prior to that, Gutjahr was a member of the U.S. Under-18 National Team for training back in October of 2014.

IUWBB: Former IU assistant Curtis Loyd hired at LSU Shreveport

Curtis Loyd will be the next head coach of LSU Shreveport, the program announced Thursday.

Loyd split ties with Indiana over the offseason after three seasons as an assistant in Bloomington. LSU Shreveport, an NAIA program, is Loyd's first head coaching job.

“We are excited for Curtis to join the Pilot family as our new women’s basketball coach,” LSUS athletic director Lucas Morgan said in a team statement. “He brings a wealth of experience from the highest level and we know he can take our program to places it hasn’t been before.”

Loyd was brought to Indiana's coaching staff by former head coach Curt Miller and retained for two seasons by current head coach Teri Moren, who hired a pair of new assistants over the offseason.

Loyd was briefly named Indiana's interim head coach shortly after Miller unexpectedly resigned in July of 2014 until Moreno was hired.

“It is my goal to recruit good people and that will make good things not only happen on the court but in the classroom as well,” Loyd said in a statement. “I don’t just want a great team but a great program.”

Baseball: Sabol selected to Major League Dreams Showcase

Indiana junior pitcher B.J. Sabol was selected to participate in the annual Major League Dreams Showcase on Aug. 9, it was announced this week.

The showcase consists of a double-header of action featuring some of the top players from the Northwoods League. The participants were selected by a panel of Major League Baseball scouts who will also be on hand to watch the participants work out.

Sabol made 20 appearances out of the bullpen for Indiana last season after transferring from San Joaquin Delta College. He finished with a 3.42 ERA, striking out 32 batters over 23.2 innings of work.

As a member of the Green Bay Bullfrogs, Sabol has made 22 appearances and owns a 2.02 ERA over 26.2 innings of work. He's struck out 44 batters, good enough for a spot in the top 10 in strikeouts among Northwoods League pitchers.
