Indiana sophomore guard Tamar Bates announced he will enter the transfer portal.
The St. Louis native had a rocky 2022-23 season which saw him heat up offensively at the beginning of the year, but ultimately he would not deliver during conference play. After averaging over nine points a game through the first five conference games of the year, Bates would regress and only average 4.85 points through the entire Big Ten Schedule.
His appearances on the court were often met with groans from Hoosier nation. His usually smooth shooting stroke scarcely yielded production.
Ultimately, he found his confidence near the end of the year, into the Big Ten Tournament and March Madness. His defense went up a tick and led to his offensive production doing the same with 14 points against Penn State in the postseason.
The Kansas City native was Mike Woodson's first recruit after being hired at Indiana. He was originally committed to Texas, but after Shaka Smart's departure to Marquette, he de-committed. His late availability gave Woodson a shot to grab the 34th-ranked player in the nation and build a Woodson-style team.
Indiana's coaching staff will continue to aggressively attack the portal to fill the holes left by multiple departures.
Bates’ departure means the loss of a shooting threat that was in line to replace Miller Kopp. Bates may try to get closer to his hometown of Kansas City and continue his collegiate career.
