Indiana. Both were in Bloomington on an unofficial visit that went into the
evening hours.
"Actually it just happened," said the father as he and his son were leaving
Bloomington. "This is where he wanted to go. Coach (Tom) Crean was the guy he
wanted to play for and he made the decision."
The momentum for the verbal had been building for the freshman who will play
this year for Indianapolis Tech.
"It was something he felt very adamant about and has felt this way for
awhile," said Lyles. "Myself and his mom had been playing the devils advocate in
reference to saying 'it's early, you don't have to' -- but he made it very clear
that he wanted to attend IU and he wanted to play for Coach Crean. So this is
why he made the decision today."
Lyles has nice size and versatility.
"Right now he's 6-foot-9 and between 208 to 210 pounds and he'll play all
five positions for us at Tech," said the father.
This is Indiana's second commitment from the Class of 2014 as earlier this
month 6-foot-2 guard James Blackmon Jr. for Fort Wayne Bishop Luers made a
verbal pledge. Lyles plays on the same summer team as Blackmon.
"He knows Black but as far as his decision to go to Indiana, honestly it had
no bearing on Trey committing now," said Lyles.
One other school was in his final thoughts before going public with the
decision.
"He was just so adamant that it was here or North Carolina and he chose IU,"
said Lyles.
Purdue and Ohio State were among the other big programs that had shown
interest. Lyles has been talked about as one of the top freshman in the country
and Indiana wasn't the only school to make the early scholarship offer.
"There was a few of them that had them out on the table," said Lyles.
