last night are correct, 6-foot-11 center Bawa Muniru has made a verbal
commitment to attend Indiana. The 240-pound senior is ranked by Rivals.com at
#111 in the latest Rivals150 for his class.
Muniru becomes the sixth member of the Hoosier recruiting class from the
Class of 2009. On paper Indiana only has five open scholarships but a newer Big
Ten rule allows member schools now to oversign by one player. Each school is
still then bound by the limit of 13 scholarship players once signees are
enrolled and officially members of their respective conference team.
Originally from the African country of Ghana, Muniru has spent about
four years in the United States, mostly near Huntsville, Alabama where he
attended Madison Academy. Because he turned 19 this past spring, Muniru was age
ineligible to compete there for his senior year and transferred to Charis Prep
in Wilson, North Carolina. Recently the NCAA ruled against using Charis Prep
transcripts and Muniru is expected to land at another private or prep school,
potentially at Central Park Christian in Birmingham, Alabama per comments from
his summer coach to us earlier this week.
Indiana's lack of size on this year's team is well documented and this week's
commitment by Muniru now gives him four additions next year of players 6-foot-7
and taller.
