College basketball insider Jeff Goodman of Watch Stadium shares his thoughts on IU from Big Ten Media Day in Chicago on Wednesday. His comments are worth a read.
GOODMAN TALKS HOOSIERS
Watch Stadium college basketball insider Jeff Goodman was kind enough to take time out of his day at Big Ten Media Day in Chicago to talk about what to expect from Indiana this season.
NICK BAUMGART: How do outsiders view this Indiana program right now?
JEFF GOODMAN: I may be in the minority here but I think Archie Miller is still a helluva basketball coach. I think he's proven it. Again, I'll go back to it: I don't think he inherited a lot from Tom Crean. He didn't inherit to lot of depth or talent. But when you have Romeo, everybody was kind of like expecting Romeo to be the fix-all, right? He was good, but not elite-level last year. They had injuries and suspensions, and all sorts of other things.
So what they have to do, number one, they have to stay healthy. They need (Jerome) Hunter to come back healthy and (Robert) Phinisee healthy, and I don't think they're going to have that one star -- they're not. They're not going to have that Lottery pick. But I think if it's more of a by-committee type of team, and they guard like Arch' (Miller) wants them to guard, if it's a more balanced scoring attack, they could be a team -- again, are they going to be a top 10 team? No.
No, they're not going be a top 10 team. But they could take a step forward, and I think that's all Indiana fans want. Like, 'don't be what you were last year.'
And then in year four, you make that jump, get back to the NCAA Tournament and sustain it. That's what Indiana fans want right now.
The margin for error is so small for this program right now. Again, what he inherited, I keep coming back to it, and it's not an excuse. Because they should have been better last year and I think Arch' would be the first to tell you they underachieved. They did.
But to me, you're really judged on year three and four when you take over a program that's an elite-level program and you're not left with elite-level talent at all.
I think you're judged on year three and four. So I think it's fair to judge Archie Miller on this year. Like, this is the year -- the next few years -- when you're going to decide if he's the right guy for Bloomington, Indiana
NICK BAUMGART: Are the low projections for this team fair?
JEFF GOODMAN: Well, IU should be projected low, they should be.
Listen, again, you look at the roster and it's like, it's okay. Some Crean holdovers, and again, I think Archie has got to get more out of this team. He's got to get an eleventh place team into the top seven. If you're in the top seven, you're an NCAA Tournament team. That's what you have to do in the Big Ten. Top seven and you're in. How's he going to do it? We'll see. But he's a good enough coach, he's got to get this team to buy in to 'the sum is greater than the individual.' Because the individuals are good, but not like 'this is Indiana' good. I don't know. It will be interesting to see how they do.
