One of Indiana basketball's top targets is one step closer to a college decision - and the Hoosiers are staying in the mix.

Indianapolis North Central forward Kris Wilkes trimmed his list from 11 schools to five on Sunday. He's now considering Indiana, Xavier, UCLA, Illinois and UConn in no particular order.

The cut dropped North Carolina, Ohio State, Washington, Arizona, Butler and Michigan out of contention from his previous list.

"He struggled with cutting schools off his list but he knew it had to be done," Greg Wilkes, the five-star forward's father said. "So that is the official list."

Wilkes' only scheduled official visit as of this weekend is a future trip to UCLA. A previously announced official visit to UNC was canceled.

Kris Wilkes previously noted he wanted to use his official visits to see schools further away from home, but with a list now down to five - and a maximum of five official visits one can take - speculation would suggest maybe the Hoosiers and Xavier could receive official trips among the others.

Greg Wilkes said the only official visit they've discussed at this time, though, is UCLA - adding that they have already been to IU several times.

“The schools that are close, I can always see them," Kris Wilkes told TheHoosier.com in July. "I want to get out there and see the schools that are far away that I haven’t seen.”

Xavier is also in contention for another in-state Indiana target, Indianapolis Southport four-star guard Paul Scruggs. Wilkes and Scruggs have both played summer ball together for the Indy Hoosiers on the Under Armour Association circuit, and while the duo aren't a potential package deal, they do remain close friends.

Scruggs already took his official visit to Xavier over the Aug. 6 weekend.

Wilkes averaged 20.0 points and 6.0 rebounds per game through the three legs of the Under Armour’s Association circuit this spring and summer while shooting 56.3 percent from the field.

He was named second-team All-State in Indiana by The Associated Press and first-team All-Central Indiana honors by the Indianapolis Star following his junior season, after averaging 22.1 points on 57 percent shooting, 5.4 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game, leading North Central to a 22-4 overall record.
