Indiana signee Anthony Leal was announced as the 2020 Indiana Mr. Basketball on Friday morning. This is the first time in Indiana program history that it has landed three straight winners of the award (Romeo Langford, Trayce Jackson-Davis, Anthony Leal).
Leal spoke to TheHoosier.com about what the award means to him.
"Truly an incredible honor... knowing what this award means and all of the people who have claimed it before me is wild," Leal said. "It just motivates me even more to keep working and keep getting better. Get's me excited for the next four years."
The 6-foot-5 Leal averaged 18.2 points and 4.3 rebounds per game this season and led Bloomington South to a 26-0 record. He also set the Bloomington South career scoring record with 1,617 points. Bloomington South was in great position to compete for a Class 4A State Championship before the season ended abruptly due to COVID-19.
Indiana has now landed 29 Indiana Mr. Basketball winners, with the award first given out in 1939. Leal joins former Indiana guard Jordan Hulls as the two winners from Bloomington South.
Tony Perkins of Lawrence North was second in the voting and Trey Galloway of Culver Academies was third in the voting.
