Undaunted by going undrafted, former IU All-American guard Yogi Ferrell was rewarded for his perseverance showed during his first NBA season.
Ferrell landed Second Team All-Rookie honors from the league, which announced the teams on Monday. He was the only undrafted rookie recognized on either team.
The Indianapolis native, now with the Dallas Mavericks, started in 29 of 36 games with the Mavs last season, averaging 11.3 points and 4.3 rebounds in 29.1 minutes per game. He also shot 41.2 percent from the floor and 40.3 percent from 3-point range.
After 10 games with the Brooklyn Nets, including 18 games with its D-League affiliate in Long Island, Ferrell was waived by the franchise on Dec. 8. Seven weeks later, he landed with Dallas, signing a 10-day contract on January 28.
Ferrell didn't need the full 10 days to convince the Mavericks to keep him. He averaged 16.3 points and 4.5 assists in 36.7 minutes per game while starting in all six games he played in during that stint, including a 32-point outburst against the Portland Trail Blazers where he tied the NBA rookie record for 3-pointers made in a single game with nine.
The Mavericks signed Ferrell to a two-year contract with a team option for the second year. Dallas picked up that option last Saturday, keeping Ferrell under contract for the upcoming NBA season.
Ferrell is the eighth former Hoosier to earn NBA All-Rookie honors, joining Victor Oladipo, Cody Zeller, Eric Gordon, Isiah Thomas, Scott May and Dick and Tom Van Arsdale.
