Last Season Review

As it was eluded to very often last season, Trey Galloway was the "spark plug" of Indiana. The energy and the intensity that Galloway would bring off the bench was something that Indiana had been missing for quite some time.

Although last year was a little bit of a breakout season for the second-year player, It was also a very injury-plagued season as well. After the hot start to the season, he would break his wrist in the game versus St. Johns and miss nearly two months of action. He would then return, play a few games before again missing a good amount of action with a high groin injury before finishing out the season available.

The game that every fan will go back to is the Northwestern game where Galloway was forced to start at point guard, a position that in a way was not his primary role, due to the multiple team suspensions that took place beforehand. The effort in which he played with that game was truly remarkable to watch and it showed just what kind of player Galloway was and that he was a guy that was going to do whatever was asked of him and give it 100%.

While he did start three total games for the Hoosiers last year, he was easily at his best coming off the bench. He defended very well, got to the basket on nearly every drive he took, and just made a ton of winning plays. Galloway, when healthy, was always in that closing lineup nearly every game.

He averaged 5.5 points, 1.7 rebounds, and 1.8 assists in 20 total games last season.

2022-23 Season Preview

Galloway will once again fill that role as the energy guy for this year's Indiana team, likely off the bench where he excels. He will continue to be a very trustworthy player in Mike Woodson's system as a guy that is going to come on the floor and do his assignments at a maximum level.

Arguably the main thing to keep track with Galloway this season is his ability to stay healthy and available for Indiana. As far a development, this past summer was one of the more important ones for him however he missed the majority of that time due to offseason groin surgery in mid-June. Although he should be ready by the time the season begins, it could take him a few games to be readjusted especially with playing with the new crop of freshman coming in.

One other area to watch with Galloway is seeing if his outside game makes a major improvement. Although he rarely shot from the outside, he still only shot a poor 19.7%. His offensive game in his first two years has mostly been finishing at the rim or creating on the drive so with an improvement shooting deep, it would not only increase his value as a player, but could be a big help in expanding Indiana's offense.

No matter what, however, Galloway will be one of the more important players for Indiana as far as bench production is concerned. His IQ and elite motor are just so valuable for this Indiana team and when he is on the floor, his teammates feed off of his energy. If he stays healthy, he could be one of the best "6th men" in the entire country.

Notable Quotes

"He's a great player, and he adds that much-needed spark coming off the bench, and he just gives us so much lift when he comes in," said Trayce Jackson-Davis previously.

"You come into a season with the expectation that you'll have certain pieces on your ball club," Mike Woodson previously said during Galloway's injury prone season. "And the fact we haven't had Galloway, that's a tremendous loss."

"Whatever the coaches need me to do, that's what I'm going to do," Trey Galloway previously said. "I'm just going to try to come in and help out as much as possible."
