For the second consecutive year, Indiana wide receiver J-Shun Harris' season is over before it could even begin.
The redshirt sophomore from Fishers, Indiana, tore his ACL during the team's scrimmage last Saturday and will miss the entire 2016 season, IU head coach Kevin Wilson announced Monday. The injury was non-contact.
"He's been unbelievably good," Wilson said. "It's harder for the medical guys and as coaches, because he's a great kid and he's worked hard."
Harris missed also missed the 2015 season after tearing the ACL in his other leg during the first week of summer.
As a freshman in 2014, Harris caught 18 passes for 168 yards and two touchdowns while playing in all 12 games with six starts. He was also a key contributor on special teams with 19 kickoff returns for 391 total yards, averaging 20.6 per return.
Harris was expected to contribute in the rotation at slot receiver, a position which saw redshirt senior Mitchell Paige step up and develop into a reliable target. However, Wilson said they can't rely solely on Paige at that position this fall.
"We're going to need to two or three out there," Wilson said.
Harris is scheduled to undergo surgery next week, according to Wilson.
"It's a big blow to the team, but J-Shun's a great kid," Wilson said. "His spirits have been high, and I compliment him on that. Once he gets surgery and starts rehabbing, that's when it gets tougher. His body language and verbiage is nice, but it's tough. It's tough."
McCray expected to miss first half of the season
Indiana junior defensive lineman Robert McCray sustained a shoulder injury which will cause him to miss the first half of the season.
"It's going to require a little bit of surgery," Wilson said of McCray's injury.
The 6-foot-2, 275-pound Rockville, Georgia, native finished with 17 tackles 1.5 sacks, 5.5 tackles for loss and one fumble recovery appearing in the final 11 games of the 2015 season.
