Indiana will likely be without its leading returning receiver for the remainder of the season.

Junior wide receiver Simmie Cobbs had surgery Tuesday morning to repair his injured left ankle but doesn’t have a determined timetable yet for his recovery.

“The text message I received this morning said things went well,” IU head coach Kevin Wilson said. “Maybe he can get back toward the end of the year. We’ll see how it goes.”

Cobbs made his season debut last Saturday against Ball State after serving a one-game suspension during the season opener at Florida International. His ankle injury occurred on his first offensive snap of the season. After trainers assisted in helping him off the field, he was taken back to the locker room and did not return to the game. The Oak Park, Illinois, native still has his redshirt available if he were to take a medical hardship this season.

Last season, the 6-foot-4, 224-pound Cobbs recorded a team-high 60 receptions for 1,035 yards with four touchdowns en route to All-Big Ten Honorable Mention honors from the coaches and the media. His performance landed him on the Maxwell Award and Biletnikoff Award preseason watch list.

“He’ll be on the shelf for awhile,” Wilson said.

Feeney in concussion protocol

Indiana fifth-year senior right guard Dan Feeney is in concussion protocol this week after sustaining the head injury late in the first half of the Hoosiers’ win over Ball State.

“Our doctors will be on top of that,” Wilson said. “First part of the week’s off, so not really anything negative there.”
