It goes without saying that it's been a pretty busy time for new IU head coach Archie Miller.

CBS college basketball insider Jon Rothstein hosted Miller for a podcast, which aired on Tuesday. He opened by asking the IU head man to guess an over/under on how many text messages he receives a day.

"I'm not sure to be honest with you," Miller said. "There's a lot going on here.

"It's a tremendous place, probably as most can anticipate. There's a lot to get your hands around. There's overwhelming passion from our fans, and requests. Trying to get two feet on the ground with our current staff, and learning our new way and trying to teach our new way to these guys that are here. Slowly but surely we're getting it up and running, and I think in time this place can be special."

Rothstein discussed a number of topics with Miller, including his inside-out strategy for building the program. Miller said at his introductory press conference that he wants to recruit the state of Indiana hard, then the surrounding regions out, and perhaps even reaching internationally.

"One thing you learn very fast is you can't keep everybody happy," Miller said on the podcast. "You have to be very consistent in a way you do your business and the way you communicate with people.

"I think it just comes down to the end of the day how you treat people. I think if you treat people the right way, regardless of whether they like it or not, in some cases they're going to get a feel for you as person who's real and fair. Indiana has as good of a high school basketball coaching lineage as maybe any state...you have tremendous grassroots programs in the state, so it's important that at IU that we great players from the state of Indiana.

"I don't know necessarily if you can get every one of them, but we have to find a way to make this a destination for these kids."

Miller also touched on trying to recruit "one-and-done" type prospects versus three or four-year players.

"I think you have to have a balance," he said. "Really it comes down to character.

"So many guys coming into school, if they're on their way out before they get there, they better be extra special competitors and they better be there for the right reasons for the time they are there. I think some guys come to college and they're on their way out, and you never really maximize the talent, and in many ways it's hard to build chemistry with those guys.

"So you have to have a balance. You have to have a delicate approach. It has to be the right kind of kid for Indiana and our staff. For us, we're about development. I think we have to bring in guys that clearly we feel can play and help us win Big Ten championships, and at the same time watch them grow up in front of us. I think programs need to be built, especially in the Big Ten where guys get older as well. I think that's an important cog for us."
