There's plenty to blame for Indiana's 26-24 loss to No. 19 Utah in the Foster Farms Bowl.
Just don't go pinning it all on redshirt junior kicker Griffin Oakes.
Oakes, who infamously missed a pair of critical field goal tries against Duke in the 2015 Pinstripe Bowl, missed a 40-yarder with 5:34 left to prevent the Hoosiers from jumping ahead to a four-point lead.
The miss proved costly, as Utah running back Joe Williams led a drive the other way that ended with Andy Phillips sending him a game-winning kick with 1:24 left.
Plenty of fans took to Twitter to voice their displeasure. Some tagged Oakes in posts by name, showing just how quickly a fan base can turn on a player who was the 2015 Big Ten Kicker of the Year before struggling in 2016.
In an emotional press conference, IU head coach Tom Allen made it clear that Oakes was not the lone reason for Indiana's loss. Earlier in the game, Oakes hit from 24 yards away.
Was he a piece of it? Sure.
But to blame him entirely is unfair, Allen said.
"It's a team game," he said. "Griffin Oakes missed a field goal, but Griffin Oakes is part of this football team. The team lost."
