A bizarre day that was anything but normal for Indiana quarterback Michael Penix ended early as Penix was injured on a run in the third quarter of Indiana's 27-11 home victory over Maryland Saturday.
After picking up a 21-yard gain on a quarterback keeper, Penix appeared to trip going out bounds and immediately had receivers Whop Philyor and Ty Fryfogle checking on him down by the visitor's tunnel.
Prior to that, Penix struggled in the first half, as he was 2-of-15 for only 37 yards. Of the two completed passes, one came on a tipped ball and the other was a jump ball he threw on an offsides penalty against the Terrapins. For the day, Penix finished 6-of-19 for 84 yards.
For Penix, it was the second time in as many seasons that he was injured against the Terrapins. Last season, he was knocked out and Peyton Ramsey had to come into the game to finish for the Hoosiers.
The injury knocked Penix out of the game and backup quarterback Jack Tuttle came in and led the Hoosiers to three scoring drives.
After the game, Indiana coach Tom Allen was asked about Penix and his status and said he is unsure.
"I don't really know right now. Do some more tests, figure it out. It's a lower-leg injury," Allen said.
When pressed, Allen said more will be known on Monday.
For the game, Tuttle was a perfect 5-of-5 for 31 yards. In five appearances a season ago, Tuttle was 6-of-11 for 34 yards.
Indiana running back Stevie Scott III, who finished with 80 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries, told the media Tuttle came into the game believing in himself and played his role well.
Allen echoed those sentiments, saying it was good that Tuttle got reps when it mattered.
"There was no drop off. He did good job communicating, understands our system, been here for a few years now. Gotten better and better and continues to grow and develop. Feel confident with Jack, but whatever position it is, guys have to step up when called upon. Really proud of him, worked extremely hard. Was critical time to execute and make good throws," Allen said.
