Olympics: Indiana leaves Rio with 8 Medals

Athletes with IU ties finished the Olympic Games in Rio with eight Medals to their credit.

Current Hoosiers and Indiana graduates combined to win eight medals total. That count includes five Gold Medals, one Silver Medal and two Bronze Medals.

The haul was the fourth largest IU count in Olympic medal history, trailing the 17 Medals from the 1968 Games, 15 Medals from 1972 and 13 Medals from 1964.

American swimmers Cody Miller (an IU graduate) and Lilly King (a sophomore) were the most decorated Hoosier athletes from the Games.

King, who sparked national attention by voicing her displeasure with Russian competitor Yulia Efimova, won Gold Medals in the 100-meter breaststroke and as a member of the 4x100 medley relay.

Miller, who before heading to Rio said he was swimming with a chip on his shoulder, took Bronze in the 100-meter breaststroke before winning Gold with the Team USA 4x100 medley relay team.

Like Miller, junior Blake Pieroni also teamed up with Michael Phelps to win a Gold Medal as a part of Team USA's 4x100 freestyle relay. Pieroni did not race in the final but was a part of the preliminary lineup.

The fifth and final Gold came at the track and field complex courtesy of Canadian High Jumper Derek Drouin. He cleared 2.38 meters in the final, never missing a single attempt.

Indiana junior Michael Hixon claimed the lone Silver Medal, teaming with partner Sam Dorman to win the three-meter synchronized springboard. Perhaps the most impressive part of the podium finish was the fact that Hixon and Dorman became partners much later in the process than typical teams.

Canadian swimmer Kennedy Goss added to her family's Olympic legacy by winning Bronze as a part of Team Canada's 4x200 freestyle relay team. She, like Pieroni, swam in the preliminary qualifiers but not the final.

Men's Soccer: IU goes 2-1 in preseason play

IU head men's soccer coach Todd Yeagley's team went 2-1 in preseason action ahead of Friday's regular-season opener against New Mexico.

No. 13 Indiana lost 2-0 to Loyola Chicago, beat Oakland 4-0 and then upset No. 6 UCLA 2-0.

Yeagley played around with his lineups throughout the preseason, not worrying too much about the results. One of the more positive signs was the emergence of sophomore Rees Wedderburn and junior transfer Rashad Hyacenth on the attacking end.

The duo that Hyacenth called "The Caribbean Connection" accounted for three total goals and an assist between the two latter contests. With the Hoosiers still determining who will end up providing an offensive attack this season outside of senior midfielder Tanner Thompson, Wedderburn and Hyacenth have appeared to answer the call.

Women's Soccer: Hoosiers go 0-1-1 to open season

IU women's soccer had a disappointing opening weekend, failing to pick up a win between two games.

The Hoosiers began the weekend drawing Louisville 1-1 at Bill Armstrong Stadium. They followed up the draw with a 2-0 loss to Western Michigan on Sunday in what head coach Amy Berbary said was a result of a lack of effort.

Indiana has a few days to recover before traveling to Indianapolis on Friday to play Butler. They'll then return home Sunday to play Northern Colorado.

Field Hockey: IU cruises by Ball State in scrimmage

Indiana field hockey defeated Ball State 5-0 in a scrimmage in Muncie, Indiana, Saturday and will open the regular season Friday against Louisville in Bloomington.

After the scrimmage, the Hoosiers and Cardinals played an overtime period and had a penalty shootout for practice as well. IU added goals in each extra session to win 7-0, according to the box score.

Junior midfielder Taylor Pearson scored three goals in the scrimmage, in which IU played both starting goalkeeper Noelle Rother and backup Katie Johnson.

Be on the lookout for a season preview on the field hockey program coming later this week on TheHoosier.com.
