Former IU All-American forward Scott May is one of seven members of the 2017 College Basketball Hall of Fame induction class, the institution announced Wednesday.
May, who played at Indiana from 1972-76 under Hall of Fame head coach Bob Knight, joins Wake Forest's Tim Duncan, Winston-Salem State's Cleo Hill, Purdue's Rick Mount, Creighton's Paul Silas, Gonzaga's John Stockton, Duke's Jay Williams and former Wisconsin, Milwaukee and Wisconsin-Platteville coach Bo Ryan to form the Class of 2017. The group, chosen by a committee which consisted of "long-time coaches, administrators, former players, broadcasters and basketball writers," according to the hall of fame's website, will be inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame on Sunday, Nov. 19, the day before the 2017 Hall of Fame Classic featuring Baylor, Creighton, UCLA and Wisconsin.
"We are honored to welcome another esteemed class into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame," said Reggie Minton, deputy executive director of the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) and chair of the Hall of Fame selection panel, in a statement. "Collectively, this group broke barriers, won championships, set records, competed for their country, and left a lasting mark on the coaching profession. Each inductee is uniquely deserving of a permanent place in our game's history."
During his four-year Hoosier basketball career, May earned National Player of the Year recognition in 1976 from the NABC, Naismith, Associated Press, Helms Foundation, Rupp and Sporting News. That same year, Indiana went undefeated and won the national title, the most recent team in Division I to accomplish the feat. May also earned consensus All-American honors in 1975 and 1976.
After concluding his IU career with 1,593 points, May was drafted second overall in 1976 by the Chicago Bulls and played seven seasons in the NBA.
With his induction, May becomes the fifth former Hoosier to be inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, joining Knight, former head coach Branch McCracken, former All-American guard Isiah Thomas, and former All-American guard Quinn Buckner. McCracken, Knight and Thomas were inducted in 2006, while Buckner joined in 2015.
