Quick Thoughts: Indiana 56, Purdue 36

Tre Roberson got a surprise start at quarterback and responded with six
touchdown passes in a 56-36 shootout over Purdue. It's the first time

since 1943 that a Hoosier quarterback has thrown for six scores.
Roberson also ran for a career best 154 yards as Indiana built a 49-9
third quarter lead to survive four late Boilermaker scores and career
best 485 yards throwing by freshman Danny Etling.
The 56 points by Indiana is the most ever scored by the Hoosiers in the
Old Oaken Bucket game rivalry that dates back to 1891. The 93 total
points is also the most combined from the two teams in the series.
All-in-all Roberson accounted for 427 total yards as he completed
25-for-37 passes for 273 yards.
In his final game as a Hoosier, Stephen Houston added 120 yards and a
pair of touchdowns on 17 carries. D'Angelo Roberts also ran for 113
yards as Indiana accumulated a season best 401 yards over the ground
and a school record 692 yards in total. First time in school history
three Hoosier players have rushed for over 100 yards in an Indiana game
"The run game gave Tre a chance to really light it up," said Kevin
Wilson in his postgame interview on BTN.
After getting the surprise start, Roberson quickly got the Hoosiers
rolling after taking the kickoff. On Indiana's fourth play from
scrimmage on a 3rd-and-1, Houston used a big block from tight end Ted
Bolser block to break to the outside where he raced 53-yards down the
sideline for a touchdown, just 1:14 into the game.
After the first of two first-half quarterback sacks from linebacker
David Cooper, Roberson hits Cody Latimer for 31 yards and later Kofi
Hughes had a terrific 30 yard catch at 2-yard line, barely keeping left
foot inbounds. Two plays later Roberson hit Shane Wynn for 2-yard TD
score to make it 14-0 with 7:24 in the quarter.
After another 3 and out for Purdue, Roberson had IU driving again but

Boiler 28 yard line.
Purdue scored the first time a play after converting a 4th and 13 when
Etling hits Danny Anthrop on 25 yard throw to IU one yard line. On next
play Etling hit tight end Justin Sinz for the early second quarter
touchdown. The point after attempt was blocked by Indiana linebam John
Laihinen, making it 14-6 Indiana.
Indiana responded with a 61 yard drive on 10 plays over 2:51 punctuated
by Stephen Houston's 14 yard TD run. Second touchdown run of game for
Houston, giving him 25 career rushing TDs. That's tied for the 4th-most
in school history (Vaughn Dunbar, 1990-92). PAT makes it 21-6.
Boilers drive stalls in red zone and Purdue settles for 36-yard field
goal by Paul Griggs to make 21-9 Hoosiers with 5:42 in half.
Indiana blows it open on next drive as Roberson hits Wynn for 4 yd
score to make it 28-9 with 3:28 to play. D'Angelo Roberts 19 yd run
followed by fa acemask personal foul play the big gainer.
Just before half Cody Latimer grabs ball away from Purdue Antoine Lewis
at the goal line for a 27-yard touchdown catch with 44 seconds left in
half and Indiana goes into the break with commanding 35-9 advantage.
Latimer's 31-yard catch in first quarter makes him the 5th player in
Indiana history to gain 1,000 receiving yards in a single season.
The second half begin for the Hoosier offense where the first half left
off as Roberson drove the Hoosiers 80 yards in 11 plays on the team's
first series, capped off by a 17 yard touchdown throw to Wynn, his
third scoring catch of the game.
Later in the quarter the Hoosier lead was extended to 49-9 when
Roberson connected with Ted Bolser from two yards out for his fifth
touchdown throw of the game. With the catch Bolser broke the all-time
school record for tight end receptions with 116.
Purdue then went 75 yards in just two plays. A 70 yard throw to running
back Brandon Cottom, then a five-yard
penalty was followed by a 10 yard touchdown throw from Etling to
freshman wideout DeAngelo
Yancey..
Cam Coffman came in for a brief appearance at quarterback in but only
managed one first down, Etling then drove Purdue 94 yards for a score
which included a 47 yard throw to DeAngelo Yancey.
Roberson returns and drives Indiana to inside the 10 but has a throw to
Shane Wynn picked off. On the next play Etling hits Danny Anthrop for
80 yards to cut the lead to 49-30 with 10:13 to play.
The Hoosiers then definitively iced the game on the next drive, running
nearly seven minutes off the clock in a 13 player, 76 yard drive
finished off by a six-yard touchdown throw to Kofi Hughes, Roberson's
record sixth touchdown score.
With the win Indiana finishes the year with a 5-7 record including 3-5
in Big Ten play. Purdue goes winless in the Big Ten and just 1-11
overall.
Notes
- Midway through third quarter Purdue defensive back Landon Feichter
was ejected for targeting Indiana tight end Danny Friend on pass over
the middle. The penalty also cost the Boilermakers because the pass was
deflected and intercepted by linebacker Ruben Ibarra.
- Purdue finished with 516 of offense. The Indiana defense has given up
400-plus yards to 11 of 12 teams faced this year.
- Indiana's 461 points in 2013 breaks the 2007 team record for points
in a single season
- Indiana had over 600 yards of offense four times this year
