Indiana has its new volleyball head coach.
The school announced they have hired Maryland head coach Steve Aird to the same position in Bloomington.
Maryland finished 13-19 in 2013 before hiring Aird, and then the program transitioned to the Big Ten from the ACC. He improved them to an 18-win team this past season, including earning seven Big Ten victories.
Aird's 2016 recruiting class at Maryland checked in at No. 16 nationally, and his 2017 class checked in at No. 9 in the country, according to VolleyballMag.com.
"Being located in the middle of a volleyball hotbed and opening a new, state-of-the-art $17 million facility, it was important that Indiana University hire the right coach to lead our program into this exciting new era," IU athletics director Fred Glass said in a statement. "In Steve Aird we have found that person.
"He is an elite recruiter, a program-builder of the highest order, a great trainer and tactician, knows the conference well, connects with and graduates his students, and is regarded as one of the best young coaches in America. We are thrilled to welcome Steve and Brandy to the IU Athletics family."
Aird has also served as an assistant at Penn State, Cincinnati and Auburn. At Penn State in 2007 and 2012-13, he helped the program to two national titles.
"I am humbled and honored to accept the Head Coaching position at Indiana University," Aird said in a statement. "I believe Indiana Volleyball has a rightful place among the nation's elite and we will work tirelessly to make that a reality.
"I cannot thank Fred Glass and his staff enough for this opportunity and for their commitment to building an excellent program the right way. Brandy and I could not be more excited to be a part of the IU family and the Bloomington community."
