Sheehey, Ferrell to represent USA
Today USA Basketball announced its final 12-man roster for the World University Games and both Will Sheehey and Kevin "Yogi" Ferrell of Indiana have made the squad. The competition begins in Russia on July 7th.
The Big Ten landed four players in total as Michigan State's Adreian Payne and Iowa's Aaron White also made the squad.
"That is a big, big deal to represent the country in Russia," said Tom Crean this afternoon on his twitter account. "They both wanted that badly."
Here are the final rosters by position in alphabetical order:
Guards: Spencer Dinwiddie (Colorado), Yogi Ferrell (Indiana), Tyler Haws (BYU), Sean Kilpatrick (Cincinnati)
Forwards: Treveon Graham (VCU), Luke Hancock (Louisville), Doug McDermott (Creighton), Adreian Payne (Michigan State), Will Sheehey (Indiana)
Centers: Cory Jefferson (Baylor), Alex Kirk (New Mexico), Aaron White (Iowa)
Ferrell is the youngest player on the team and the only college sophomore-to-be.
Kazan, Russia is the host of the games this year and the team will depart ro Russia on Monday for practice sessions beginning July 3rd. The team will have a scrimmage against a Russian club team on July 4 and meet the Russia World University Games team in an exhibition game on July 5th, The first games are on July 7th and the final games will be on July 16th.
The USA Team is in Group C with Australia, Canada, Czech Republic, Sweden and United Arab Emirates.
"We have guys that can play more than one position, that's one of the great strengths we have," said USA head coach Bob McKillop (Davidson) on the USA Basketball official site today. "I think we shoot the ball particularly well from a number of positions, and we've got guys who want to be teammates. Those two things, to me, are the biggest advantages that we have, or the biggest strengths for our team."
